In fall 2016 we will launch new web content celebrating 35 years of the Commonwealth Speakers Bureau, including videos of past presentations and a directory of speakers available to make future presentations.
At the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, we believe the humanities inspire people to make a difference, and the Commonwealth Speakers Bureau has laid a foundation to build on as we create new programs that educate citizens and strengthen communities.
In 1981 the Commonwealth Speakers Bureau began partnering with arts and culture organizations to present public humanities programs to Pennsylvanians in every region of the state. Arts and museum educators, folk artists, dancers, musicians, and scholars have entertained, educated, and challenged audiences to reflect upon a wide range of topics from a variety of perspectives.
Moving forward our goal is to invest in projects that use the humanities as a tool for civic engagement or for youth and adult learners to build skills for school, work, and personal improvement. With this goal in mind, we have decided to discontinue the Commonwealth Speakers Bureau in its current form at the end of this year.
